Trend Alert: Velvet!

Tuesday, December 27, 2016

It's undoubtedly a fact by now that velvet is one of the most seen trends this winter! But are you wearing it properly? That's the million dollar question I am going to help you with today.

Velvet is made of various weights and types, so before you make another impulsive buy (yes please lets stop producing so much waste by throwing things away every year... only in Hong Kong, around 5k t-shirts are going to the bin every second) think about what would flavour your type of body, skin tone, and most importantly what would give you that huge smile back when looking at yourself in the mirror.

There's 3 types of velvet: crushed velvet, double velvet, and velveteen. Each of them with its own thickness and texture. I am a huge fan of crushed velvet, I find incredible the chiaroscuro effect (light/shadow) that the fabric produces. Besides it's the greatest new thing this season so if you can only buy one piece of clothing, please do buy one with crushed velvet. If it's an accessory, I would go for double velvet or velveteen.

If you are a petite like me I would also recommend choosing contoured silhouettes in order to get a polished stylish look. If you decide to go all crazy on baggy clothing, that's ok, crushed velvet looks amazingly cool in oversized pieces. However be conscientious that you might look sloppy and much smaller than you actually are. If you would like to look thinner and elegant go for a black velveteen dress - 100% success guaranteed!
